The Broadway-bound musical adaptation of Beat Street, based on the groundbreaking 1984 film, has assembled its principal creative team. The Wiz director Schele Williams will helm the production, while Hell’s Kitchen writer Kristoffer Diaz will write the book. Grammy-winning music supervisor Jason Michael Webb joins the team as music supervisor, arranger and orchestrator, alongside previously announced executive producer and artist Nas.

Nas is creating new material for the stage production and expanding the original film’s influential soundtrack. Last month, Nas, Williams, Diaz and Webb collaborated during a 29-hour workshop to develop the musical adaptation. Additional details about casting and the production schedule are expected to be announced in the coming months.

Set in the early 1980s, Beat Street follows a group of young creatives in the South Bronx, including a graffiti artist, DJ and break-dancer, as they pursue their ambitions within the emerging hip-hop movement while confronting the realities of urban life. The original film was among the earliest movies to prominently portray hip-hop culture, incorporating breakdancing, DJing, scratching and graffiti art. Its influence has been acknowledged by artists including Ice-T, Ice Cube, LL Cool J and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The 1984 film, directed by Stan Lathan and produced by Harry Belafonte and David V. Picker, featured performances and appearances from artists including DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa & The Sonic Force, Grandmaster Melle Mel & The Furious Five, Rock Steady Crew and the New York City Breakers. The Broadway musical will be produced by Richard Fearn, Arthur Baker, Michael Holman and Peter Bittenbender, in association with Mass Appeal. Baker and Holman also produced the original film, while ShowTown Theatricals will serve as general manager and Nathan Gehan and Jamison Scott of ShowTown Productions will executive produce.
