Universal Television has optioned Lights Out, the bestselling sports thriller by author Elise Hart Kipness, for development as a television series. The project marks a major step in bringing Kipness’ popular Kate Green series to the screen following its commercial success.
The adaptation boasts a high-profile producing team, including Mary J. Blige, Bruce Miller, and Milana Edwards-Brooks of Blue Butterfly Productions, alongside Debra Martin Chase of Martin Chase Productions. Liz Friedlander is set to direct and executive produce, with Kipness, Liza Fleissig, and Ginger Harris-Dontzin serving as consulting producers.
Lights Out, the first novel in the series, follows former Olympic athlete-turned-sports reporter Kate Green as she navigates personal and professional turmoil while investigating the murder of an NBA superstar. When her best friend becomes the prime suspect, Kate launches her own search for the truth, even as her career stalls and her personal life begins to unravel. The book became an instant bestseller after its 2023 release, with subsequent installments continuing its momentum.
Blige’s Blue Butterfly Productions, launched in 2019, has expanded her career into film and television with multiple successful projects, while Chase remains a pioneering force in Hollywood with a string of major productions. Friedlander brings extensive directing experience from top television series, adding further momentum to the highly anticipated adaptation as development moves forward.
