ESSENCE Ventures has confirmed that President and CEO Caroline Wanga will not be returning to the company following a yearlong leave of absence for health reasons. In a statement released August 25, the media brand praised Wanga for her leadership and vision, writing, “The ESSENCE family extends heartfelt appreciation and best wishes to Caroline Wanga as she continues her journey of storytelling, empowerment, and cultural leadership.” Wanga, who previously served as Target’s chief DEI officer, joined ESSENCE Ventures in 2020. During her tenure, Wanga oversaw several major initiatives, including the planning and execution of this year’s ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans. However, the 2024 festival faced significant backlash due to low attendance, high ticket prices, and scheduling issues. Legendary R&B singer Stephanie Mills even penned an open letter voicing her frustration, citing “significant production issues” that hindered both her performance and the overall artist experience. Despite the controversy surrounding the festival, ESSENCE highlighted Wanga’s broader impact on the brand and its cultural footprint. Known for her dynamic leadership and unapologetic advocacy for Black women, Wanga is expected to continue influencing conversations around culture, empowerment, and representation beyond her role at ESSENCE. The company has not yet announced a successor to the position.
