Actress and producer Issa Rae and Grammy Award-winning artist Tems have officially become the newest co-owners of San Diego FC, Major League Soccer’s newest expansion team. The announcement marks a historic milestone, with Tems becoming the first African-born woman to own a professional sports team. Both women join the club ahead of its inaugural MLS season, set to begin next February.


Tems, born in Lagos, Nigeria, brings deep cultural and personal ties to the sport. She grew up watching her brother play soccer and has since become a global music force known for her soulful voice and creative influence. San Diego FC leadership believes her presence will strengthen the organization’s international reach and its connection to youth through initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa. “Her global influence will help us reach new audiences,” said SDFC Chairman Sir Mohamed Mansour.

Club CEO Tom Penn echoed Mansour’s excitement, highlighting Tems’ alignment with the team’s mission of elevating young talent and fostering cultural exchange. Issa Rae also expressed her enthusiasm about entering the sports world for the first time. “Soccer is a universal language that has the power to bring people together,” Rae said, emphasizing her commitment to helping the club make history in MLS.


San Diego FC will make its league debut on Feb. 23 against reigning MLS champions LA Galaxy. The team is primarily owned by Mansour and the Sycuan Tribe, the first Native American tribe to own a professional soccer team. Additional partners include former Manchester United star Juan Mata and San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado.

Rae and Tems join San Diego FC in collaboration with Pave Investments, a private African firm previously involved in NBA Africa. Pave Chairman Tunde Folawiyo and Founding Director Kwamena Afful also join the ownership group, marking a significant expansion of African representation within global sports leadership.
